Toils with oil.....paint.

Hello there, I finally finished Hobgoblin. I have to say something happened during the process that was a mistake and I feel as though it worked out pretty damn good. A 'happy mistake' as a wise old painter used to say. I visited the art store recently to pick up a yellow hue I needed to help finish the mask, I bought oil. The whole painting and almost all of my work is a mixed media, but I have never worked too much with oil. On the second day when the paint wasn't dry I knew something was amiss. Luckily I had only primed some of the darker shadows for the creases in the mask. Alot of times I just wait for the acrylic to dry and paint right over the top to create layers just like one might do in photoshop. I hadn't used a lot of oil paint, just on key areas in his face. I was really pleased with the look of the oil. It made his face look rich, almost alive. I was pretty upset when I realized what I had done this close to finishing the piece. I was probabaly 4 to 6 hours from sketch to finished canvas in on this piece. I decided to go ahead and finish it regardeless and see how the three or four mediums I used worked together. Believe me, I was verrrrrry close to trashing it and starting over. I'm glad I forged ahead and completed it, as it gave me a serious appreciation for ANYONE painting with oil. Luckily enough I had terps on hand to help with blending clolored pencils. The terps worked better than alcohol to cut the oil and get the oil off of my skin as well. Anyway, without further ado here is the finished piece Hobgoblin along with an 'action' shot of me early on in this piece. As always thanks for reading and happy mother's day to all the mothers out there. We love you and all you do.
